Balancing Faith and Freedom

Balancing Faith and Freedom

Living as Free and Faithful Christians and Balancing Faith and Freedom

You know how we always talk about how important freedom is? We’re blessed to live in a country where we can make our own choices, speak our minds, and follow our beliefs. But as Christians, we’ve got this extra layer to consider—how do we live out our faith while enjoying the freedom we have? It’s like walking a tightrope, trying to keep our balance between being true to God and making the most of our freedom.

The Gift of Freedom

Let’s start with freedom. It’s a big deal, right? Not just the freedom to choose what we want to do, but the kind of freedom Jesus gives us. In John 8:36, He says, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." That’s freedom from sin, from guilt, from everything that weighs us down. It’s the kind of freedom that lets us live with purpose, knowing we’re loved and forgiven.

And then there’s the freedom we experience in our everyday lives—freedom of speech, freedom to worship, and the freedom to chase our dreams. But here’s the thing: with that freedom comes responsibility. Galatians 5:13 tells us, "Do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love." So, it’s not just about doing what we want; it’s about using our freedom to make a positive impact.

When you look at our society today, it seems like everything is driven by feelings. People are more concerned about how something makes them feel rather than whether it’s right or wrong. Our world has drifted far from what the Bible teaches us about good and evil. Isaiah 5:20 warns us, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." This shift began back in the 60s with the “Free Love Revolution” and the motto “Make Love, Not War.” What started then has evolved into movements centered around abortion rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and transgender rights—each heavily influenced by feelings.

But God never intended for us to live by our feelings. He calls us to live by His Word and to have faith in His truth. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 reminds us that "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." Our feelings can become strongholds that hold us back from the plans God has for us. Instead of letting our emotions lead us, we need to trust in God’s Word and let it guide our lives.

The Call to Faithfulness

Now, let’s talk about faithfulness. Staying true to our faith isn’t always easy, especially when the world around us is pulling us in different directions. There’s this pressure to go along with what everyone else is doing, even when it doesn’t line up with what Jesus taught us. But as Christians, we’re called to a higher standard. We’re called to live in a way that reflects God’s love and truth, even when it’s tough.

Paul puts it perfectly in 1 Corinthians 10:23: "I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but not everything is constructive. Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. It’s about making choices that are good for us and those around us.

Walking the Path of Balance

So, how do we balance all this? It’s definitely a daily thing. We need to stay close to God through prayer, digging into the Bible, and surrounding ourselves with people who encourage us in our faith. It’s about being mindful of what influences us and choosing to live in a way that honors God.

Jesus is our ultimate example. He lived with perfect balance—completely obedient to God, yet full of grace and love for others. He didn’t force anything on anyone, but He showed what true freedom looks like: a life of love, service, and sacrifice.

As we figure out this balance between faith and freedom, let’s be intentional about it. Let’s make sure we’re living in a way that reflects our love for God and the freedom He’s given us.
