Family Blessings: A November Devotional to Start the Month

November has always held a special place in my heart. There's something magical about this month that invites us to pause, reflect, and truly count our blessings. As the autumn leaves fall and we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving, it's the perfect time to gather our families together and focus on all the ways God has been faithful to us throughout the year.

The Heart of Gratitude

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

When the Pilgrims gathered for that first Thanksgiving in 1621, they had endured unimaginable hardships. They had lost loved ones, faced harsh winters, and struggled to survive in a new land. Yet they chose to give thanks. Their example reminds us that gratitude isn't just for the easy seasons of life - it's a choice we make regardless of our circumstances.

This November, I want to challenge you and your family to embrace that same spirit of thanksgiving that our nation's founders displayed. It's not about pretending everything is perfect or ignoring real struggles. Instead, it's about training our eyes to see God's faithfulness even in the midst of difficulty.

Starting Your Family's November Journey

Picture this: your family gathered around the dinner table, not rushing through a meal, but taking intentional time to share what you're grateful for. No phones, no distractions - just hearts connecting over God's goodness. This doesn't have to be complicated or fancy. Some of the most meaningful family devotions happen in the most ordinary moments.

Begin each day in November by asking your family this simple question: "What's one blessing you noticed yesterday?" Watch how this shifts your family's focus from what's lacking to what's abundant. Children especially have a beautiful way of seeing blessings in the smallest things - a butterfly they spotted, a hug from grandma, or even their favorite cereal for breakfast.

The Scripture That Changes Everything

Let me share one of my favorite passages for family devotions: "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17).

This verse reminds us that every blessing - from the roof over our heads to the freedom we enjoy as Americans - comes directly from God's loving hand. When we teach our children to see blessings this way, we're not just creating a gratitude practice; we're building their faith foundation.

Take a few minutes each evening to read this verse together as a family. Ask each person to name one "good and perfect gift" they received that day. You'll be amazed at how this simple practice transforms the atmosphere in your home.

The Thousand Blessings Challenge

Here's a fun family project that will carry you through the entire month: create your family's "Thousand Blessings" list. Get a large jar or notebook and place it somewhere central in your home. Throughout November, challenge each family member to write down blessings as they notice them - no blessing is too small, and no blessing can be repeated.

You might start with the obvious ones: health, family, home, food. But as the days go on, you'll find yourselves noticing smaller details: the way morning sunlight streams through your kitchen window, a neighbor's kindness, your child's laughter, the freedom to worship God openly, or even a perfectly timed green light when you're running late.

This isn't just busy work - it's heart work. When we train ourselves to notice blessings, we're actively fighting against the enemy's lies that we don't have enough or that God doesn't care about us. We're choosing to align our thoughts with God's truth.

Learning from Our Nation's Story

Our American heritage is filled with stories of people who chose gratitude in difficult circumstances. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington led his troops in prayer and thanksgiving even during the harsh winter at Valley Forge. When Abraham Lincoln proclaimed our national Thanksgiving holiday in 1863, our country was torn apart by civil war. Yet he called Americans to acknowledge "the gracious gifts of the Most High God."

These leaders understood something crucial: gratitude isn't a luxury for good times - it's a discipline that strengthens us for every season. When we teach our children about these historical moments, we're showing them that faith and gratitude have been woven into the fabric of our nation from the very beginning.

Share these stories with your family this month. Talk about how previous generations chose thanksgiving even when facing uncertainty. Help your children see that they're part of a long legacy of Americans who have trusted God through both prosperity and hardship.

Making It Personal for Your Family

Every family is different, and your November devotions should reflect your unique situation. Maybe you're a military family, and this month you're especially grateful for freedom and those who serve. Perhaps you're walking through a difficult season, and your blessings list includes small moments of peace and hope. Or maybe you're in a season of abundance, and you're teaching your children to share their blessings with others.

As a proud Navy mom myself, I know how military families understand sacrifice and service in ways that deepen our gratitude. This year my son is deployed and will not be home for the holidays. Our table will carry his empty chair, and that quiet space makes every gathering more precious. We pray for him and for all who are far from home, and we hold to this promise, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18) Whether your family has military connections or not, November is a perfect time to thank God for those who have served our country and protected our freedoms.

The key is to be authentic. Don't try to force gratitude or make it feel artificial. Instead, create space for honest conversations about both struggles and blessings. Some days, your family's blessing might simply be that you made it through a hard day together. That's enough.

Prayers for Family Unity

"How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!" - Psalm 133:1

November is also an excellent time to pray specifically for unity in your family. With holiday gatherings approaching, emotions can run high and old tensions might surface. Use this month to pray for patience, understanding, and love to characterize your family relationships.

Consider having each family member pray for the others by name each evening. Teach your children to ask, "How can I pray for you?" This builds empathy and connection while showing them that prayer isn't just about asking for things - it's about caring for one another's hearts.

The Ripple Effect of Grateful Families

When families practice gratitude together, it creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond your home. Grateful children become grateful adults who raise grateful children. They become the kind of people who see opportunities to serve rather than focusing on their own needs. They develop resilience that comes from knowing God is faithful even when circumstances are challenging.

Your family's gratitude practice this November might seem small, but you're actually participating in something much bigger. You're building a legacy of faith that will impact future generations. You're creating memories that your children will carry with them long after they've left home.

Looking Ahead with Hope

As this November devotional journey comes to a close, don't let the gratitude practice end with the month. The habits you build together during these thirty-one days can become a foundation for year-round family faith practices. Consider continuing your blessing jar into December, or starting a new tradition for the Christmas season.

Remember, the goal isn't perfection. Some days your family devotions might last two minutes instead of twenty. Some evenings you might forget altogether. That's okay. God's grace covers our imperfect efforts, and He delights in our sincere attempts to draw closer to Him as families.

This November, give your family the gift of intentional gratitude. Create space for thanksgiving that goes beyond a single Thursday. Train your hearts to see God's faithfulness in both the extraordinary moments and the beautifully ordinary ones.

The blessings are all around us, waiting to be noticed. All we have to do is take the time to see them and thank the One who gives them so freely.
