The Tomb Is Empty: Why Christians Should Stop Living in Defeat
Share
There is a question every believer has to answer not just on Easter but every single day of the year. If the tomb is empty why are so many Christians still living like it is not? We celebrate Resurrection Day with incredible joy and we sing the hymns and we gather in our best clothes and we proclaim that He is risen. But then Monday morning comes around and fear starts to creep back in. Doubt returns to our minds and stress overwhelms our hearts while old habits begin to resurface. Somewhere between the miracle of the empty tomb and the reality of everyday life we start living like we are still defeated.
This is a cultural problem that has seeped into the church. We live in a world that thrives on anxiety and feeds on a victim mentality. We are told that we are defined by our traumas or our bank accounts or the political climate of the day. But that was never the intention of the resurrection. The resurrection was not just a historical event to be studied. It was a total victory to be inhabited. When we live in defeat we are essentially telling the world that the stone was never rolled away. It is time we stop acting like the grave still holds the King.
The Scripture Foundation
To understand why we can live in total victory we have to look at the source of our power. In Romans 8:11 the Word of God says that if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. This is a massive promise that we often overlook. The very same power that rolled the stone away and defeated death itself is not far off in some distant heaven. It lives inside every single person who calls on the name of Jesus.
The resurrection was a declaration that sin is defeated and death is defeated and the grave has no more power. It was not a symbolic gesture but a literal victory. If the same Spirit that brought Jesus back to life is residing in your heart then why are you living as if you are powerless? We are called to be more than conquerors not because of our own strength but because of the indwelling Spirit of God. Living from this foundation changes everything about how we face our trials.

A Heritage of Freedom and Faith
This concept of living in victory is woven into the very fabric of American history. Our founding fathers understood that spiritual freedom is the foundation of all other forms of liberty. They were not men who lived in defeat. They were men who believed in the Providence of God and the power of a life lived for His glory. When you look at the American Revolution you see a group of people who refused to live under the weight of oppression because they knew their true Master was in heaven.
The founders drew inspiration from the idea that every individual has a God given purpose and a dignity that no government can take away. This belief is rooted in the resurrection because it proves that we are not just cogs in a machine. We are children of the Living God. When we understand our spiritual identity we become much harder to control or defeat. Historical figures like Patrick Henry or Samuel Adams spoke with a boldness that only comes from a deep seated faith. They knew that if God is for us then nobody can truly be against us. This same spirit of bold faith is what we need to reclaim today in our personal lives and in our nation.
What the Resurrection Means Today
Living like the tomb is empty today means we have to address our identity problems. Most of us do not struggle with believing that Jesus rose from the dead. We struggle with believing that His resurrection actually changed who we are. We say we are forgiven but we still carry heavy guilt from years ago. We say we are free but we still live in constant fear of the future. We say we trust God but we still operate out of a spirit of anxiety.
The resurrection changed your identity forever. You are not who you were before you met Christ. You are not defined by your past mistakes or bound by your current circumstances. You are not limited by what the world or the media says about you. You are redeemed and you are restored and you are raised to a brand new life. The stone was not rolled away so Jesus could get out. He did not need help leaving the tomb. The stone was rolled away so we could look inside and see that it was empty. It was an invitation for us to believe and to walk out of our own graves of despair.
When we stop visiting what God has already buried we start to experience true freedom. Many people stay stuck because they keep revisiting old wounds and replaying past failures. But why are you visiting a grave that Jesus already walked out of? This ties into how we view our society as well. For example in our blog post about Christianity vs. Socialism we discuss how biblical faith is rooted in transformation and personal responsibility rather than government dependency. Real freedom comes from the inside out and it starts with the resurrection power of Jesus.

A Question for Reflection
Take a moment to look at your life right now. What is the one thing you are still holding onto that Jesus has already conquered and buried in that tomb?
Closing Thoughts on Victory
The resurrection demands a response from every one of us. You cannot stay neutral when you are standing in front of an empty grave. It demands that you decide if you are going to live like this is true or if you are going to continue in your old ways. If Jesus really did rise from the dead then your future is not limited and your struggle does not control you. Victory is not something you are trying to achieve through your own hard work. It is something you are stepping into because of His finished work.
Stop living as a victim of your circumstances. You serve a King who has already won the ultimate battle. When you walk into your office or lead your family or engage in your community do it with the confidence of someone who knows the tomb is empty. This kind of freedom changes how you show up in the world. It is the reason we create apparel that reflects these values. Sometimes we need a visible reminder of these invisible truths.
Our No Fear Just Faith T Shirt is designed for exactly that. It is a reminder that because Jesus is alive you do not have to be ruled by fear. When you wear a message like this you are making a declaration to yourself and everyone around you that your faith is bigger than the storms of life.

Understanding our national foundation is also a key part of living in victory. If you want to dive deeper into how our faith and our country are connected I encourage you to read The Truth About Separation of Church and State. When you see how deeply faith is woven into our history you will realize that standing for your beliefs is the most patriotic thing you can do.
The stone was rolled away and the tomb is empty and Jesus is alive. That means you do not have to live defeated anymore. Not today and not tomorrow and not ever. The only question left is this. Will you live like it is true?
